France to return treasures from Benin after 129 years

France to return treasures from Benin after 129 years

In a decision with possible consequences in museums across Europe, France was displaying 26 objects looted in the colonial era for the last time before sending them back to Benin.

Anthropomorphic wooden sculptures, royal thrones, and sacred altars were looted by the French Army in West Africa in the 19th century.

President Emmanuel Macron suggested that France should now correct past mistakes in a landmark speech in 2017 in which he said he could no longer accept "that much of the cultural heritage of many African countries is in France." His speech started the process for the controversial return of royal treasures obtained during the imperial and colonial eras. The French will get a last glimpse of the objects at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac between October 26 and 31.

Culture Minister Roselyne Bachelot tried to calm concern among European museums and stressed that the initiative "will not create a legal precedent."

A law was passed last year to allow the restitution of the statues to the Republic of Benin, as well as the return of a decorated sword to the Senegal Military Museum.

However, the minister noted that the French government law had been deliberately specific to apply only to the 27 artifacts. "It does not establish any general right to restitution," he said, nor does it "question in any way" the right of French museums to maintain their collections.

However, critics of these initiatives - such as the British Museum in London, immersed for decades in a battle with the Greek government over the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles - argue that it will open the doors to deprive Western museums of their collections. Many are based on objects acquired or stolen during the colonial era. French museums alone have at least 90,000 artifacts from sub-Saharan Africa.

The history of the Treasures of Abomey is as dramatic as their sculpted forms. In November 1892, Colonel Alfred Dodds led an expeditionary French looting force in the kingdom of Danhomè, in the south of what is now Benin. Colonial troops stormed the Palace of Abomey, home of King Behanzin, and took away many royal objects, such as the 26 artifacts that Dodds donated to the Museum of Ethnography at the Trocadero in Paris in the 1890s. Since 2003, the pieces have been in the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.

One hundred and twenty-nine years later, his long trip abroad will finally come to an end.

Speaking at a press conference last week, Benin's Culture Minister Jean-Michel Abimbola described the return of the works as "a historic milestone" and the start of more cooperation between the two countries. The country is funding a museum in Abomey to house the treasures, which will be partially funded by the French government.

The official transfer of the 26 objects was scheduled to be signed on November 9 in Paris with Macron present, with the pieces arriving in Benin a few days later, Abimbola said.

"There was a void created between Benin's historical treasures that is gradually being rebuilt," said Fortune Sossa, president of the African Network of Cultural Journalists.

Finance for daily life

Like every first Monday in October, the Financial Education Day is celebrated , an activity that seeks to create financial culture in Spanish society so that citizens can make their economic decisions with responsibility and knowledge.

http://fdiindia.xtgem.com/index

Finance isn't just reserved for CFOs, stock traders, or bankers. All of us, throughout our lives, make financial decisions that can condition our future. Take, for example, buying a house or asking for a loan to buy a car ... Or maybe renting or leasing is a better option ? If we have money saved in the bank, we may choose to acquire a financial asset that offers us profitability.

https://fdiindia.blogdomago.com/7285693/everything-to-know-about-fdi-processes

Given the usefulness of finances in our daily life, we will try to clarify some basic concepts.

First of all, it is important to understand the concept of the time value of money . Imagine that you win a significant amount in “Pasapalabra” and the organizers of the contest give you two options: receive the money immediately or within a year.

https://fdiindia.blogdomago.com/7285693/everything-to-know-about-fdi-processes

Obviously we will prefer to receive the money as soon as possible. If we think about it a little more, we will realize that given inflation (a generalized and sustained increase in the prices of goods and services over a period of time) we would buy less things within a year than now. Also, you could invest that money for a year and get more money. And we cannot forget the risk factor (who knows how the situation will be after a year).

How to know how much money is worth

This reflection is related to the concept of interest rate, which is nothing more than the price of money. We are all clear that if we ask a bank for a loan we will have to return an additional amount to the amount obtained (the interest rate). Here it is interesting to know the difference between the TIN (Nominal Interest Rate) and the APR (Annual Equivalent Rate).

https://fdi-india.notepin.co/fdi-in-india-foreign-direct-investment-fdi-occurs-when-a-0q0095b

The TIN is the percentage that the bank receives for assigning the money, it reflects only the cost of the financial product and can be calculated in different periods (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.). In addition, it does not take into account any expenses associated with the operation (commissions, management costs, etc.).

https://www.click4r.com/posts/g/2572579/the-role-of-loans-for-a-business-to-invest-in-india

To know exactly how much that credit is going to cost us, it will be more interesting to know the APR , which takes into account the value of the TIN, the frequency of payments (we will change everything to annual frequency), the bank fees for cancellation and amortization and the expenses of the operation. Therefore, to compare the different loans offered by banks and see which one is more interesting, you have to look at the APR and not the TIN.

Many markets
Another thing that we find every day in the news and in the company is the evolution of the markets. There are actually many types of markets, from the neighborhood market where fruits, vegetables or meat are sold to equity markets or virtual markets.

What are markets ? Basically the place where supply and demand meet (a store, a hypermarket, a virtual store on the internet, the stock market ...) and the operation takes place; that is, where products or services are bought and sold. The most named in the news are the financial markets where financial assets are bought and sold.

Financial assets, investment and savings
The financial assets are nothing more than a document issued by a company, private or public institution or bank that gives its buyer the right to receive future income by whom it is issued. For the issuer it means a financial liability, an obligation or debt that must be paid.

Examples of assets (for the buyer) or liabilities (for the issuer) are government bonds and obligations, or corporate debt bonds, corporate stocks, promissory notes, and so on. Financial assets are a way of directing savings toward investment.

More or less risk
If we have savings and we want to invest them, we can choose between fixed income financial assets and variable income ones . With fixed income you know the amount of payments and when you are going to receive them. Let us think, for example, in the public sphere, in Treasury Bills, Bonds and State Obligations. In the private sphere, there are promissory notes, bonds, and debentures.

There is also the variable income , where neither the profitability nor the return on the invested capital is assured nor (in fact) they are known when the investment is made. Here would be, for example, the shares of publicly traded companies. They are the parts in which the property of the company is divided. The shareholder will have the right to receive a part of the profits generated if the company decides to distribute them. The shares can also give voting rights in the decision-making of the company.

The choice between fixed or variable income will depend on the risk that the investor wants to assume. The risk understood as the possibility of losses or that the result is not as expected. It must be understood that the higher the risk, the higher the expected return on a product. Therefore, you should always be wary of financial products that offer high returns with little risk.

Maximize profit
The profitability relates the benefit of the investment with the investment made. It seeks to achieve maximum profitability. In other words, obtain the maximum benefit with the minimum possible investment.

The liquidity refers to the ability of the company to get cash immediately without suffering losses. If we talk about an investment, we mean the ability to immediately convert it into cash.

When investing, both the company and investors must seek the balance between profitability, risk and liquidity .

Accounting is not the same as financing
Another important issue is understanding the difference between accounting and finance . While accounting focuses on obtaining internal and external economic information of the company, finance includes management decisions on investments and financing.

From the analysis of the information provided by accounting, the financial planning of the company is carried out. In smaller companies, accounting and finance may be handled by the same person, but in medium-sized and large companies, the accountant usually reports and reports to the CFO.

We see, therefore, that finances are an issue that affects us all and that it is important to know them in order to make good decisions in this area.

The Spot robot has a mini and popular version

Spot is the best known robot from Boston Dynamics . The only problem is that the price of this four-legged prototype is very high, so it can only be purchased by a small group of people.

Fortunately, the Stanford University Robotics Laboratory developed a more affordable version of this popular invention.

It is Mini Pupper, a robot very similar to Spot , only that its size is more reminiscent of small breeds, such as a Chihuahua.

Once assembled, this robot measures 209 x 109 x 165mm and weighs just 560 grams.

One of the striking aspects of Mini Pupper is that it can be programmed to carry out the movements that the user wants. If the idea is for you to just walk or take walks around the house, you can stick with just the basic settings.
To move safely, the robot has a system of detection cameras that analyze the environment in search of obstacles that prevent its passage.

To allow it to move, the prototype has several engines that have been specially designed for this project by the Mang Dang company.
Thanks to this, Mini Pupper can walk, jog or gallop with a range of about half an hour with a single charge of its 800 mAh battery.

The robot also has an animated LCD face that can be programmed to display different expressions.

For now, the Mini Pupper is part of a Kickstarter campaign. Those interested can purchase a $ 589 package that would allow them to assemble the robot on their own, of course, if the creators ever decide to launch it on the market.

Driverless vehicle deploys with 5G at the border

Neighbors and pilgrims, surprised by the futuristic prototype that the CTAG tests on the old Tui bridge

135 years after the first train crossed the Pelayo Mancebo bridge in Tui , the only railway crossing between Galicia and Portugal has once again been the scene of another transport milestone . The old pass over the Miño was closed to traffic yesterday so that the Galician Automotive Technology Center (CTGA) could carry out the first tests of the autonomous car of the future. All the spotlights of the mobile cameras of tourists, neighbors and pilgrims who passed through the raia were focused on this prototype of futuristic mobility that not even the Cathedral of Tui overshadowed.

The Local Police shielded the road access to the bridge, but those who crossed it on foot were exceptional witnesses to the coming-out of this autonomous vehicle that seemed to be taken from a science fiction movie. A large CTAG team tested the car from early in the morning until six in the afternoon. During that period, the unidentified object for the great majority captured the attention of passers-by, still without flying and arousing the same expectation as if it were a UFO .

These tests are part of the European 5GMobix project , in which the City Council of Vigo and the CTAG participate. The pandemic disrupted the planned schedule for the deployment of the 5G network between Vigo and Porto , which was finally concluded at the beginning of this year, and which is what allows this vehicle without a driver to be tested. Yesterday is the first of at least five border tests scheduled for the next few weeks with this autonomous, connected and electric vehicle. The first tests are between Tui and Valença to verify the efficiency of data communication between the two countries in the field of the 5GMobix network.

This vehicle or shuttle was presented in November last year at the AutoMob Summit forum, organized by the metal employer Asime. In November 2015, Vigo became the first Spanish city to drive a vehicle without a driver. PSA Peugeot Citröen (now Stellantis ) made history by joining the 599 kilometers that separate its production centers in Vigo and Madrid with an autonomous C4 Picasso.

In the case of the shuttle being tested in Tui, it is a passenger vehicle and the tests in the raia are extremely interesting in order to analyze the interoperability of the autonomous functions of the vehicle with the different communication operators.

Project

The technology center plans in the vicinity of the new Salvaterra-As Neves logistics platform a project that would transform the Galician automobile industry and that is the high-speed circuit for autonomous car testing . These facilities would allow the main autonomous vehicle innovation projects to be centrifuged in the Vigo area. The complex, for which an investment of 22.5 million is expected, would have 10 kilometers of tracks distributed by zones that simulate different driving environments and laboratories.

The world's first cross-border connection
The world's first 5G cross-border data connection in mobility was launched on May 22, 2019 between Tui and Valença. Two players completed the journey between the two municipalities while playing PUGB Mobile on two tablets while circulating in different vehicles. The gamers maintained a stable connection and uninterrupted crossing the border thanks to this new technology that provides the necessary latencies to play in real time, anytime and anywhere and also key for the vehicle connected and autonomous.

Solo: the small electric vehicle designed for micromobility

The Canadian company ElectraMeccanica presented its first electric vehicle . It is Solo, a small model with three wheels and a single seat designed for urban mobility where spaces are increasingly reduced.

The structure of this vehicle was supported by figures that indicate that, in at least 80 percent of cases, the car is only occupied by those who drive it.

This electric car will be presented at a special event on October 4, 2021, in Los Angeles.

The small car is powered by a 53 hp electric motor and, thanks to the 17.30 kWh lithium battery that is supplied in less than three hours, it is capable of traveling about 160 kilometers on a single charge, in addition to reaching a maximum speed of 129 km / h.

This small car also includes power steering and brakes, air conditioning and roll bar, among other implements.

From the company they explain that the size of the car should not indicate that it is less safe, but quite the opposite.

“We have gone to great lengths to put a lot of security on this vehicle, even if it is a three-wheeler and is classified as a motorcycle,” explains Paul River, CEO of ElectraMeccanica in a Business Insider note .

"Inside the vehicle it has all the accessories and comfort features that you are used to in a passenger car: it has a heated seat, air conditioning, heating and Bluetooth connection.

This single-seater vehicle will go on the market with a price of $ 18,500.
